How to Prepare a CNC Machine for Relocation

CNC machines are among the most common — and most demanding — pieces of equipment to relocate. They are heavy, precisely levelled, sensitive to shock and tilt, and often tied to electrical, coolant, and air systems. A CNC relocation that is not prepared carefully can knock a machine out of alignment or damage components that are expensive to repair. This checklist covers the preparation, handling, and re-installation considerations for moving a CNC machine.

Why CNC Relocation Is Different

A CNC machining centre is a precision machine. Its accuracy depends on being levelled, anchored, and aligned to specification, and its internal components can be affected by shock, vibration, and tilt during a move. Treating a CNC relocation like a general machinery move risks the machine's performance after re-installation.

That means the move has to be planned around the machine's sensitivity — not just its weight — and the re-installation has to return it to specification.

Before the Move: Backup and Documentation

Protect the machine's data and configuration before anything is disconnected.

  • Back up programs, parameters, and offsets.
  • Document the machine's current level and alignment state.
  • Record utility connections — power, air, coolant, drainage.
  • Photograph the machine and its installation before disconnection.
  • Confirm what re-installation, levelling, and alignment will require.

Disconnection and Preparation

The machine has to be isolated and made safe to handle before it is moved. Disconnection typically involves licensed trades.

  • ▸Electrical disconnection by a qualified electrician.
  • ▸Disconnection of air, coolant, and process lines.
  • ▸Draining and securing fluids.
  • ▸Securing moving axes and components for transit.
  • ▸Confirming the machine is isolated and safe to handle.

Access and Handling

Plan the route and the handling method for the machine's weight and sensitivity.

  • ▸Confirm door and overhead clearances along the route.
  • ▸Check floor conditions and plan protection.
  • ▸Select handling methods suited to the machine's weight and sensitivity.
  • ▸Plan rigging if the machine must be lifted.
  • ▸Protect the machine's surfaces and components during handling.

Transportation

For a move between facilities, transportation is coordinated around the machine's dimensions, weight, and sensitivity. The trailer configuration, load securement, and route are planned to keep the machine stable in transit. See our heavy equipment transportation guidance for the haul itself.

Re-Installation and Return to Specification

After placement, the machine is levelled, anchored, and aligned to return it to specification. That work is what determines whether the CNC runs accurately after the move.

  • ▸Place the machine on its prepared foundation or pad.
  • ▸Level the machine to specification.
  • ▸Anchor the machine to its foundation.
  • ▸Reconnect utilities through the appropriate trades.
  • ▸Confirm alignment and readiness before returning to production.
